Saint Lucia is a volcanic island forming part of the Windward Islands, the territory was settled by the French in the seventeenth century. In the eighteenth century, Britain and France struggled for control of the island before the latter finally prevailed in 1814 at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The colonial economy was based on sugar plantations with enslaved West Africans imported to provide labour. It gained its independence in 1979 as a Commonwealth Realm. Current population c. 180,000.
